🧭 Broken Bow visitor guide

More than the town you drive through

Broken Bow is the hometown in the middle of it all. The Dierks brothers founded it in 1911 as a lumber town and named it after their old hometown, Broken Bow, Nebraska. About 4,200 people live here today, where U.S. 70 meets U.S. 259 in McCurtain County, and most visitors pass through on the way up to the cabins, Hochatown and Beavers Bend.

Don't just drive through. Downtown along Broadway and Main has gift shops, boutiques, antiques and coffee stops. The lower Mountain Fork River runs just east of town for canoe and tube floats. And Park Drive is where you'll find the groceries, the casino and plenty of sweet stops. This guide groups the local businesses in our directory so you can plan a morning in town or a whole day. Tap any name for hours, photos and directions.

History lovers have two museums close by: the Gardner Mansion and Museum, built in 1884 and once home to Choctaw leadership, and the Indian Memorial Museum, with Native American artifacts, pottery and fossils. Broken Bow Memorial Stadium dates to the 1930s and was built by the WPA.

  • Where: McCurtain County, southeast Oklahoma, where US-70 meets US-259
  • Founded: 1911, by the Dierks brothers, named after Broken Bow, Nebraska
  • Population: 4,228 at the 2020 census
  • Up the road: Hochatown about 8 miles north, Broken Bow Lake about 10 miles north
  • Nearby: Idabel about 12 miles south, the Arkansas line about 16 miles east
