🧭 Hochatown visitor guide
Plan a Hochatown trip that's more than the hot tub
Hochatown sits in the pine-covered hills of McCurtain County in southeast Oklahoma, about 8 miles north of Broken Bow on U.S. Highway 259. Most people come for the cabins, but the days fill up fast. Broken Bow Lake and Beavers Bend State Park are a few minutes away, and the stretch of Highway 259 through town is packed with boat rentals, family attractions, wineries, breweries and places to eat.
This guide groups the local businesses in our directory by the kind of day you want: on the water, fishing, riding, playing, tasting or relaxing. Each one has a short note, and you can tap any name for its hours, phone number, photos and directions. Every business here is a real listing in the Reservation Destination directory, and this page updates when they change their details.

🌲 The outdoors
Beavers Bend State Park and Broken Bow Lake
The state park and the lake are the reason Hochatown became a getaway in the first place. Beavers Bend State Park covers 3,482 acres along the Mountain Fork River and has been a state park since 1937. Inside the park you'll find the David L. Boren hiking trail system, the Forest Heritage Center museum, a nature center, Cedar Creek Golf Course and plenty of riverside picnic spots. In 2017 the park took in the old Hochatown State Park, so you may still see both names on maps and signs.
Broken Bow Lake was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the Mountain Fork River. It began filling in 1968 and reached full level in 1970. Today it covers about 14,000 acres, with roughly 180 miles of shoreline and water up to 185 feet deep. Below the dam, the Lower Mountain Fork River runs through the park as a stocked trout stream that is fished all year.
A bit of history: the original Hochatown, settled by Choctaw families in the 1880s, lies under the lake today. Its post office closed in 1963 and the last family left in 1966, before the water rose over the old town site.

Boat, pontoon and jet ski rentals
Most lake days start at one of the marinas near Stevens Gap or at the Beavers Bend marina. Pontoons are the easy pick for families and big groups: they carry a crowd, have some shade and move slowly enough for swimming stops. Jet skis and Sea-Doos are for speed, and a tiki boat tour lets someone else do the driving.
Ask about fuel when you book, because some companies include it and some ask you to refill before you return. On summer weekends and holidays, boats are often reserved days ahead. Bring sunscreen, water and a dry bag for phones, since shade is hard to find on open water.

Fishing guides and fly fishing
There are two very different fisheries here. Broken Bow Lake is big, deep water known for bass and crappie, with white bass and walleye in season. The Lower Mountain Fork River below the dam is a trout stream that winds through Beavers Bend State Park, and it draws fly anglers from all over the region.
A guide is the quickest way to learn either one. They bring the boat or the flies, know where the fish are biting that week and handle the gear, which makes a guided trip a good choice for kids and first-timers. Most anglers need an Oklahoma fishing license, and the trout water has its own rules, so check with your guide or the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation before you go.

Planning tips for your Hochatown trip
Pick your season
Summer is the busiest time on the lake and the river. Fall color in the hills usually arrives in late October and November. Winter is quiet, and bald eagles spend the season around the park and the lake from about November through February. Spring brings blooming dogwoods and good crappie fishing.
Book ahead
Cabins, boats and guides fill up on summer weekends, holidays and fall color weekends. Weekdays are much easier.
Plan for weak signal
Cell service can drop in the hills and on parts of the lake. Download your maps and save your booking details before you head out.
Stock up in Broken Bow
Hochatown has small markets and gas stations, but the large grocery stores are in Broken Bow, about 8 miles south.
Check for burn bans
McCurtain County sometimes has burn bans in dry weather. Check before you light a fire pit or a campfire.
Arrive before dark
Many cabin roads are gravel, steep and unlit. If you can, reach your cabin in daylight on the first night.
