🌲 Jeep trails

Ouachita National Forest roads and trails

1 place

The national forest wraps around Hochatown and Broken Bow Lake. Its gravel and dirt forest roads are where most local Jeep and UTV rides go. The Forest Service says no permit is needed to ride, but you must stay on routes shown as open on the Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM). Cross-country travel is not allowed, and wilderness areas are closed to all motor vehicles.

Some forest roads are open to cars and trucks but not to off-road machines. On roads open to regular traffic, the driver and vehicle must meet Oklahoma's normal road rules. Motorized trails are for vehicles 64 inches wide or less, and the Forest Service asks for a spark arrester.

Want a full ATV trail system? Wolf Pen Gap, southeast of Mena, Arkansas, is a Forest Service OHV trail system with about 40 miles of marked loops. Wolfpen ATV Campground sits right on it. It's a longer trip from Hochatown, so plan it as a day or overnight.

🌄 Scenic drives

Talimena Scenic Drive, US-259 and Beavers Bend

2 places

The Talimena National Scenic Byway runs 54 miles along the top of Rich Mountain and Winding Stair Mountain between Talihina, Oklahoma, and Mena, Arkansas. It is Oklahoma Highway 1 and Arkansas Highway 88. It is open all year with no fee, and it has scenic pull-offs, Queen Wilhelmina State Park and the Kerr Arboretum along the way. The road has no shoulders, so take your time.

To get there from Hochatown, drive US-259 north through the Ouachita Mountains, past Smithville and Big Cedar, to the junction with Highway 1. The drive up is a pretty ride on its own.

For a short drive, take the OK-259A loop. It leaves US-259 and runs about 10 miles through Beavers Bend State Park and along Broken Bow Lake. Off-road-only UTVs and ATVs are not street legal, so bring a car, Jeep or street-legal rental.

💡 Before you go

Tips before you hit the trail

🍂

Get the free map

Download the Ouachita National Forest Motor Vehicle Use Map for the Oklahoma district in the Avenza Maps app. It works with no cell signal and shows which roads are open.

📅

Know your machine

Street-legal UTVs need plates and a driver at least 16 with a valid license. Off-road-only UTVs and ATVs stay off public roads. Ask your rental shop which kind you have.

📶

Stay on open routes

No driving cross-country, no wilderness areas, and leave gates the way you found them.

🛒

Check the burn ban

McCurtain County often has a burn ban in dry months. Check the banner at the top of this page before you build any fire at a trail stop or camp.

🔥

Fuel up first

Fill the tank in Hochatown or Broken Bow. Gas stations are far apart once you head into the forest or up US-259.

🌙

Helmets and belts

Rental shops require them. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring water.
