🧭 Keeping trout
The short answer
Yes, you can keep trout on the Lower Mountain Fork River, but only in Area 1, the stretch from the Broken Bow Lake spillway down to the Old State Park Dam. There, the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife lets you keep 3 trout a day. Below the Old State Park Dam (Area 2), a rainbow has to be over 25 inches and a brown over 30 inches to keep, so almost every fish goes back.
So the guide matters less than where you fish. The trout guides below all fish the Lower Mountain Fork. None of their websites spell out a keep-or-release policy, so ask the guide when you book. If you want a cooler full of fish for dinner, a crappie trip on Broken Bow Lake is the better bet.
- Daily limit: 3 trout total for the whole Lower Mountain Fork trout area
- Area 1 (spillway to Old State Park Dam): Keep up to 3. Only 1 rainbow over 25 in. Browns only if over 30 in.
- Area 2 (Old State Park Dam to US-70): 1 rainbow over 25 in. and 1 brown over 30 in.
- Rules everywhere: Oklahoma fishing license. Barbless hooks only. Bait OK. No cast nets.

Where you can keep a trout, and how many
The Lower Mountain Fork trout area is about 12 miles of river below the Broken Bow Lake dam, down to the US-70 bridge. About five miles of it runs through Beavers Bend State Park. Trout are stocked all year. The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife splits it into two areas with different limits.
Area 1 runs from the Broken Bow Reservoir spillway down to the Old State Park Dam. You can keep 3 trout a day here. Only one of them may be a rainbow over 25 inches, and a brown trout must be over 30 inches to keep (one only).
Area 2 runs from the Old State Park Dam down to the US-70 bridge. Here you may keep 1 rainbow, only if it is over 25 inches, and 1 brown, only if it is over 30 inches. Fish from both areas count toward one 3-trout total for the day.
A few more state rules: barbless hooks only, bait is allowed, no cast nets, one rod per person. Once a trout goes on your stringer you can't swap it for a bigger one later, and your stringer has to be marked with your own license customer ID number. Rules can change, so check the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife's Trout Area Information page before your trip.

💡 Before you go
Before you keep a trout
Fish Area 1 to keep
Normal-size rainbows can only be kept above the Old State Park Dam. Ask your guide to fish there if you want to take some home.
Get your license
Adults need an Oklahoma fishing license. A separate trout license is not needed. You can buy one online from the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife.
Mark your stringer
Every angler needs their own stringer, marked with their license customer ID number.
No culling
Once a trout is on the stringer, it stays. Decide before you put it on.
Bring a cooler
Pack a cooler with ice in the car so your trout stay cold for the ride back to the cabin.
Clean your gear
The state asks you to clean and dry waders and gear after fishing the Lower Mountain Fork, to stop the spread of an algae called didymo.
