🧭 Shooting ranges
The short answer
There isn't a public shooting range in Broken Bow, Idabel or Hochatown that we could find. The closest free public range is the Kiamichi Shooting Range on the Ouachita National Forest near Talihina, about 1.5 to 2 hours north. It's open sunup to sundown with no fee.
If you need a full 100 yards or more, the Oklahoma Wildlife Department's Pushmataha WMA range near Clayton has target frames out to 200 yards, but it is closed while it's being rebuilt (the state expects it done in fall 2026). The Atoka WMA range has a 100-yard rifle range with covered benches, about 2.5 hours west.
Wildlife Department ranges need a current Oklahoma hunting license (or hunting/fishing combo) for every shooter, unless you're exempt. Call before you drive, since ranges close for construction and hunts.

🌲 Closest public range
Kiamichi Shooting Range (Ouachita National Forest)
This is a free Forest Service range north of Talihina, run by the Oklahoma Ranger District, whose office is in Broken Bow. It's open sunup to sundown and there's no fee. There are no restrooms and no drinking water, so bring your own. Range rules are posted at the range.
Directions from Talihina: go 3.5 miles north on Highway 271 to Frazier Creek Road, turn right (east) for 3 miles to a crossroad, then turn left (north) on Forest Road 6132 for 1.25 miles. From Broken Bow it's roughly 75 to 80 miles.
The Forest Service doesn't list the lane lengths online, so if you need 100 yards, call the Oklahoma Ranger District office at (580) 494-6402 (weekdays 8 to 4) before you go.
🎯 100 yards and up
Wildlife Department ranges with 100+ yards
Pushmataha WMA, about 5 miles south of Clayton: the rifle range has target frames at 25, 50, 100 and 200 yards, plus a pistol range and a trap range. Right now it's closed while the berms are rebuilt. The state's estimate is fall 2026, and no one may use it during construction. Check the Oklahoma Wildlife Department's shooting range page before you go.
Atoka WMA, 11 miles north of Atoka on US-69, then east 0.8 mile on Wesley Road: a 100-yard rifle range with 4 covered benches, a 30-yard pistol range, a trap range and an archery tower. Parts of the WMA close to non-hunting use during deer season, so call the area biologist first.
At every Wildlife Department range, shooting hours are sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset, shooters under 16 need an adult with them, eye and ear protection are required, and targets must be paper or clay. No exploding targets, no tracers, no full-auto, nothing .50 caliber or larger, and no alcohol.
⚠️ Public land rules
Can you just shoot in the national forest?
On the Ouachita National Forest it's against the law to fire a gun within 150 yards of a house, building, campsite, developed recreation area or any place where people are. Exploding targets and tracer or incendiary rounds are banned. You must have a safe backstop, and you have to pick up your targets and brass.
On Wildlife Department land (like the McCurtain County WMAs), you can only fire a gun while hunting or at a posted range. Beavers Bend State Park and the Broken Bow Lake areas aren't places to target shoot.
Staying in a rental cabin? Don't shoot on the property unless the owner says yes in writing. Most cabins sit close to their neighbors, and many don't allow guns to be fired at all.
