🧭 Hiking in deer season

The short answer

No, the trails are not off limits when deer season opens on October 1. Beavers Bend State Park does not allow hunting, because Oklahoma state parks are game refuges under state park rules. The park's hiking trails stay open right through deer season.

Hunting does happen on the land around the park: the Ouachita National Forest, Corps of Engineers land around Broken Bow Lake, and wildlife management areas like Three Rivers and Honobia Creek. Those places stay open to hikers too. If you walk there in the fall, wear something bright orange. For fire and water, check the burn ban strip at the top of this page and the Corps of Engineers' Broken Bow Lake page before you go.

  • Beavers Bend trails: Open all year. No hunting inside the state park
  • Where hunting happens: National forest, Corps lake land and wildlife management areas
  • Deer season 2026-27: Archery Oct 1 to Jan 15, gun Nov 21 to Dec 6
  • Fire & water: Burn ban strip on this page, and the Corps' Broken Bow Lake page

Beavers Bend State Park trails stay open

Oklahoma's state park rules make every state park a game refuge, so hunting is not allowed in Beavers Bend unless the state sets up a special hunt in writing. That makes the park the easiest place to hike in the fall without thinking about hunters.

The David L. Boren hiking trail system links a set of shorter trails through the hills, from easy one-mile loops to the five-mile Skyline Trail. On a rainy day, the Forest Heritage Center inside the park is a good indoor stop. For a guided ride instead of a walk, the park's train depot also runs horseback trail rides. Call ahead, since their schedule changes.

🦌 2026-27 season

Oklahoma deer season dates for 2026-27

These are the statewide dates from the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation for the 2026-27 season. Archery: October 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027. Youth gun: October 16 to 18, 2026. Muzzleloader: October 24 to November 1, 2026. Regular gun: November 21 to December 6, 2026. Holiday antlerless gun: December 18 to 31, 2026.

The busiest weeks in the woods are the gun seasons, especially the regular gun season around Thanksgiving. Archery hunters are out from October 1 on, but they are quiet and close range.

🧡 Hunting land

Hiking in the national forest, on lake land and on WMAs

1 place

The Ouachita National Forest allows hunting almost everywhere except developed recreation sites and posted areas. The Forest Service tells visitors to wear hunter orange in the woods during hunting season. Most Corps of Engineers land around Broken Bow Lake is also open to hunting, except the developed recreation areas and the land around the dam.

Three Rivers and Honobia Creek are big wildlife management areas north and east of the lake. They have no marked trail system, just roads. Hiking is allowed, but a land access permit from the Wildlife Department is needed. Check their pages before you go.

Wildlife Department rules make deer hunters using a gun or muzzleloader wear at least 400 square inches of orange: a head covering and an upper garment. Hikers aren't required to, but an orange cap or vest is good sense.

Wildfire and water conditions

Wildfire: burn bans come and go here in the fall. If McCurtain County has one today, a red strip at the very top of this page says so. Our burn ban guide explains what a ban means. Never leave a lit cigarette on a trail, since dry pine needles catch fast.

Water: for today's Broken Bow Lake level and how much water is being released into the Mountain Fork River, check the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Broken Bow Lake page (Tulsa District). Our Broken Bow Lake guide also shows the live lake level from the Corps.
