🧭 Running

The short answer

The best place to run that isn't a hiking trail is the park road inside Beavers Bend State Park, along the Mountain Fork River. Go early in the morning, before the park gets busy. On a rainy day, or if you want an indoor workout, buy a day pass at a gym in Hochatown or Broken Bow.

Don't run on Highway 259 through Hochatown. It is busy, and much of it has little or no shoulder. The state is building sidewalks on part of it, but it is still a work zone. Most hiking trails here are rocky and hilly, so plan on roads, a gym or a short, easy path instead.

  • Best road run: Beavers Bend State Park park road, early morning
  • Rainy day: Gym day pass at Grit & Glow or Sweat Shack
  • Skip it: Highway 259 through Hochatown (traffic, work zone)
  • Bring: Bright clothes, a phone and water. Cell service is spotty.

Running in Broken Bow and Idabel

🚧 Heads up

Why not Highway 259?

Highway 259 through Hochatown is the main road for the whole area. It is busy with cabin traffic, trucks and boats, and much of it has little or no shoulder. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation is widening 2.3 miles of it between the two SH-259A turnoffs and adding sidewalks and crosswalks. The first phase was set to finish around October 2026, but treat it as a work zone until it's done.

Many cabin roads are also narrow, steep gravel with blind curves and no lights. A short out-and-back on your own cabin road in daylight is fine, but don't run them in the dark.
